Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) joined first responders, families and state officials today at the 2025 annual EMS memorial dedication ceremony held at the Empire State Plaza. The ceremony honored five emergency medical services personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities.

Among those honored was FDNY Emergency Medical Technician Christopher Swierkowski, a longtime resident of Assemblyman Slater’s district. Swierkowski passed away on May 11, 2024, from a certified World Trade Center-related illness stemming from his work during the rescue and recovery efforts following the 9/11 attacks.

“Today, we remember a true hometown hero,” said Slater. “Christopher’s decades of service to the fire department and the people of New York City left an impact that will not be forgotten. He dedicated his life to helping others and responded without hesitation when his city needed him most. It was a privilege to be present today to honor Christopher and all of the brave EMS professionals who gave their lives in service to others.”

Swierkowski served the people of New York City for more than 24 years. He is survived by his wife Joann, daughter Shelby and grandson Carter.
