Slater Calls for Action After Tragic Loss of Highway Worker

Statement from Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) on the death of Robert Bornt, DOT supervisor and Hoosick Falls fire chief killed in the line of duty

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends and colleagues of Robert Bornt. His tragic loss is a painful reminder of why I brought a resolution to the Assembly just last month recognizing Work Zone Safety Awareness Week and urging drivers to slow down, stay alert and move over when they see flashing lights.

In 2024 alone, the Department of Transportation reported more than 450 work zone intrusions, leading to 161 injuries and two tragic deaths. I will repeat: these incidents are entirely preventable.

This issue hits close to home in the 94th Assembly District, where we lost Jake Arcara, another young highway worker, in a similar work zone accident in 2022. We continue to keep Jake’s family in our prayers, and now we extend those same thoughts to the loved ones of Robert Bornt.

There are several legislative proposals and safety initiatives that deserve immediate attention to better protect highway workers across New York and hold repeat offenders accountable. Every person working on our roads deserves to make it home at the end of the day. Their safety should be non-negotiable.”
