Slater, Harckham Unveil Memorial Highway Dedication in Honor of NYPD Lt John McArdle
Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) and Sen. Pete Harckham (SD-40) unveiled a sign designating a portion of Route 301 in honor of John F. McArdle, recognizing his lifelong commitment to public service and the Carmel community. The dedication ceremony took place on Saturday with local officials, family members and community residents in attendance.
The designation follows the passage and signing of legislation sponsored by Slater and Harckham to honor McArdle’s legacy of service, including his distinguished career with the New York City Police Department and his advocacy on behalf of 9/11 responders and retired first responders.
“John McArdle was someone who truly lived a life of service — whether it was protecting others as a member of the NYPD or advocating for his fellow first responders right here in our community,” said Slater. “This designation is a small but meaningful way to honor his legacy and ensure his impact is never forgotten. I’m proud to have worked with Senator Harckham to make this tribute possible.”
Sen. Harckham said, “John McArdle was a pillar of the Carmel community, and his lifelong commitment to public service was evident in all he did. From his distinguished career with the NYPD to his strong advocacy for 9/11 responders and retired first responders, he brought professionalism, tireless energy and deep compassion to his every effort. I’m grateful to my colleague Assemblymember Slater for his partnership in making this tribute possible and thank Governor Hochul for signing our legislation into law.”
Town of Kent Supervisor Jaime McGlasson said, “I couldn’t be happier that we were able to name the state road after Lt. McArdle. It’s a small but lasting way to honor his legacy, ensuring that every mile traveled carries a reminder of the impact he made on our community.”
Barbara McArdle said,” The naming of this highway in honor of John lifts my spirits to know that the sacrifices of 9/11 will not be forgotten. Hopefully, young people who pass the sign and learn about John will be inspired to emulate John’s commitment to public service and also make a difference in the lives of many.”
