Assemblywoman Michaelle C. Solages Welcomes Howell Road Elementary School Chamber Orchestra and Junior Chorus to Albany for Music in Our Schools Month

Students from Howell Road Elementary School Chamber Orchestra and Junior Chorus perform at Empire State Plaza as part of statewide celebration of music education

Albany, NY New York State Assemblywoman Michaelle C. Solages (D-Elmont/Valley Stream) proudly welcomed students from the Howell Road Elementary School Chamber Orchestra and Junior Chorus to Albany as part of the New York State School Music Association's (NYSSMA) annual Music in Our Schools Month celebration.

NYSSMA's Music in Our Schools Month features student musical performances from schools throughout New York State, with performances held at the Empire State Plaza in Albany. The Chamber Orchestra and Junior Chorus, under the leadership of Principal Dr. Jasmine G. Shepherd and the dedicated guidance of their incredible music teachers, proudly represented Assembly District 22 at this prestigious statewide event.

"Watching these young musicians take the stage in Albany fills me with tremendous pride," said Assemblywoman Solages. "The students of Howell Road Elementary School are a true reflection of the talent and spirit of our community. Music education builds discipline, creativity, and confidence, and these young people demonstrate all of that and more. I also want to recognize Dr. Shepherd and the music teachers who invest so much of themselves in nurturing these students every single day."

During Music in Our Schools Month, NYSSMA also arranges opportunities for music educators to meet with state legislators to advocate for the importance of music in schools.Music in Our Schools Month was originally established by NYSSMA and is now celebrated during the month of March in all 50 states and at U.S. Military Base schools in Europe. What began as a single day in 1973 has grown into a month-long statewide and national celebration of student achievement in music education.
