Assemblyman Hawley Attends Highway Dedication for Ex-Army Specialist
Assembly Deputy Minority Leader Steve Hawley (R,C-Batavia) proudly attended the highway dedication ceremony yesterday in the Town of Albion honoring the late Army Specialist Jason Johnston, a local hero who gave his life in service to his country.
The ceremony, held at the intersection of Route 98 and Route 31A, officially designated a portion of the highway in Johnston’s memory. Hawley was joined by Senate Minority Leader Robert Ortt (R,C-North Tonawanda), local leaders, veterans and members of Johnston’s family and community to pay tribute to the fallen soldier.
“Standing beside Jason Johnston’s family and neighbors today was a deeply humbling experience,” Hawley said.“Jason’s courage, dedication, and selflessness represent the very best of our community. His legacy will live on not only through this highway but through the countless lives he inspired through his service and sacrifice.”
Johnston-who was born and raised in Albion-enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2006 with dreams of serving his country and later attending Syracuse University. He was tragically killed in action on Dec. 26, 2009 when his unit was bombed in Arghandab, Afghanistan.
“This dedication ensures that everyone who travels this road will remember Jason Johnston’s name and the price he paid for our freedom,” Hawley added. “May his memory continue to unite and strengthen our community for generations to come.”
