"They are joining us here today to observe the proceedings. They traveled more than 40 miles to be here with us today and have an educational interest in Claudette Colvin … the civil rights leader, who is being honored with an Assembly resolution … later today … as you heard. From the start of the year they have immersed themselves in the study of human and civil rights issues, both past and present through literature, historical documents and many, many other learning experiences," said Assemblyman Santabarbara while introducing Easthill Elementary School students, who were in chambers to witness the Assembly pass a resolution in honor of civil rights leader Claudette Colvin.
