Assemblyman DiPietro Calls Out Gov. Cuomo Over Effects Of Gun Legislation

Assemblyman David DiPietro (R,C-East Aurora) voted against Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s NY SAFE Act on January 15, 2013 and has been concerned about the impact the law will have on New York’s unstable economy, citing a recent news report that Remington Arms Company, Inc. is “carefully examining its options” for relocation out of New York State. Remington employs over 1,200 New Yorkers.

“Gov. Cuomo has not only done damage to the fundamental rights of every single New York citizen, but now he is trying to chase one of the most storied New York industries out of the state. One thousand two hundred New Yorkers may lose their jobs just so Gov. Cuomo can play to the people of Iowa. The people are not pleased with this law or how its passage was handled. A plurality of New Yorkers fear this bill has gone too far toward curtailing our rights as a free people,” said DiPietro. “New York has not yet seen the damage that this legislation will ultimately cause. I sincerely hope Remington stays in New York, and I hope we can work with them to expand and employ more New Yorkers, but with these policies coming down the line in the dark of night, how many businesses do you think will stay? Because there was no public discussion of this legislation, many problems were not found until it was too late.”
