Brook-Krasny Calls for Strengthened Involuntary Commitment Laws Following Violent Stabbing in Brooklyn

Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny (R,C-Coney Island, Bay Ridge) attended a press conference alongside his colleagues in the state Assembly and Senate to address a violent incident in Brooklyn that left four young girls brutally stabbed by their uncle, who had a known history of mental illness. This horrific case highlights the urgent need for stronger laws surrounding involuntary commitment for individuals dealing with severe mental health issues. Brook-Krasny believes preventive action is crucial to protect the public and ensure individuals with mental health challenges receive appropriate care and intervention.

“The incident that took place in our community earlier this week is a clear signal that we are not handling mental health correctly in our city,” said Brook-Krasny. “We cannot afford to sit by and wait for the next tragedy to happen. We need to strengthen our policy on involuntary commitment not just to protect individuals but those around them as well. I will continue to work with my colleagues in the state Assembly and Senate to make sure these laws are strengthened and we give our law enforcement officers and first responders the tools and training they need to handle these situations.”
