Speaker Heastie and Assembly Member Septimo Lead Tour of Hunts Point Meat Market to Highlight $10 Million State-Funded Infrastructure Upgrades
Bronx, NY – On Tuesday, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Assembly Member Amanda Septimo organized a tour of the Hunts Point Meat Market to highlight progress made through a $10 million state-funded infrastructure pilot upgrade and to discuss additional updates needed to ensure the facility remains safe, environmentally sustainable, and fully code-compliant.
The event brought together members of the Bronx Assembly Delegation for an on-site look at one of New York’s most essential food distribution hubs. The tour provided lawmakers the opportunity to see firsthand how these state investments are modernizing the facility, improving working conditions, and supporting the businesses and workers who keep New York fed.
“The Hunts Point community sits at the heart of New York’s food economy, and the workers here deserve facilities that reflect their essential role,” said Assembly Member Septimo. “I’m proud to partner with Speaker Heastie and my Bronx colleagues to continue advocating for investments that make this site safer, greener, and more efficient for the thousands of Bronx residents and small businesses that depend on it every day.”
“The Hunts Point Meat Market plays a significant and multifaceted role in New York City’s food system and the Bronx’s economy and community,” said Speaker Heastie. “As a central hub, it ensures efficient and cost-effective food distribution throughout the city. Moreover, the market provides thousands of union jobs, contributing to the economic vitality of many Bronx families. The $10 million state investment underscores our commitment to the market’s safety and continuity for future generations. Thank you to Assembly Member Amanda Septimo for her efforts in ensuring these funds were included in our state budget.”
The Hunts Point Meat Market, located within the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center, plays a critical role in New York’s economy – supplying food to restaurants, schools, hospitals, and grocery stores across the region. It also serves as a cornerstone of the Bronx’s workforce, providing steady employment opportunities and supporting small businesses throughout the borough.
During the visit, delegation members reaffirmed their commitment to securing additional resources to maintain the site’s long-term stability and safety, ensuring the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center continues to serve as a pillar of economic and environmental progress for the Bronx and beyond.
