Assemblywoman Paulin Finds Westchester Has $151 million in Unclaimed Funds

Westchester – Westchester residents were able to claim cash that had been left in abandoned accounts. The money was taken over by the state after it was left unclaimed in bank and corporate accounts. The event was held in the lobby of Scarsdale's Village Hall on August 13th. Steve Young, from The Jewish Community Center of Mid-Westchester, was among those who picked up unclaimed cash. His organization had $3,400 in lost funds. Nick Camillone, from Nick's Electrical Service, reclaimed $2,100 for his company.

A team from the state comptroller's office was on site to help people investigate whether they had any unclaimed funds. Comptroller Tom DiNapoli said, "Fifty dollars is the amount of unclaimed funds that is typically found." In total there is $10.5 billion in unclaimed funds in New York State. $151 million of that belongs to people, companies and organizations in Westchester.

"It's important that we continue to help get the money back in the hands of its rightful owners, especially during these tough economic times," said Assemblywoman Amy Paulin. Paulin is urging people to search online or call if they think they may have unclaimed funds. Searches for unclaimed funds can be performed online at www.osc.state.ny.us/ouf or by calling (800) 221-9311. Another good starting point to seek out missing money is the Consumer Reports website. They have a web page dedicated to locating forgotten funds, including tax refunds and 401(k) plans.
