Bailey Addresses Correctional Officers’ Walk-Outs in Western NY
Assemblywoman Andrea Bailey (R,C-Geneseo) expressed concern today over the ongoing walk-outs by many correctional officers across western New York. The walk-outs, which began at Collins Correctional Facility and Elmira Correctional Facility, have now expanded to more than 25 facilities statewide, severely impacting prison operations.
“The reports of mandatory extended hours, severe staffing shortages and exposure to horrible working conditions are deeply troubling to me,” said Bailey. “Our correctional officers deserve a safe working environment and the assurance their concerns are being addressed.”
Bailey emphasized the urgency of addressing the root causes of this: “It’s imperative that the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision speak with these correctional officers to resolve these issues quickly,” she stated. “We have to make sure our prisons are secure for both staff and inmates, and that begins with addressing the systemic problems that have led to this crisis.”
In light of these events, Bailey is calling for a comprehensive review of current staffing models, working conditions and safety protocols within New York’s correctional facilities. “The situation has escalated to a point that demands immediate action,” Bailey concluded. “I continue to stand with our correctional officers and will always advocate for them to ensure their needs are met.”
