Santabarbara Highlights the Continued Impact of the 9/11 Notice Act in 2024
Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, a sponsor of the 9/11 Notice Act (A75B) passed in 2023 and still active today, announced the ongoing importance of this legislation, which ensures that individuals present in Lower Manhattan and northern Brooklyn after 9/11 are informed about their eligibility for the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) and the World Trade Center Health Program.
"While over 80% of first responders are enrolled in these programs, many civilians remain unaware of the essential support available to them," said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. "This law ensures that everyone affected, particularly those with qualifying health conditions, can access the care and compensation they need, even over 20 years later."
The 9/11 Notice Act mandates ongoing collaboration between the New York State Economic Development agency and the Department of Labor to inform businesses and employees of their eligibility. Importantly, individuals can still apply for the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, as established by federal law under 49 USC 40101. The World Trade Center Health Program also remains available for medical monitoring and treatment.
This legislation is a vital step toward providing long-term support to all those impacted by the tragic events of 9/11.
