Statement from Assemblyman Santabarbara on Secretary Kennedy’s Remarks About Autism

Chair, New York State Assembly Committee on People with Disabilities

“As the father of a 23-year-old son with autism, I’ve seen firsthand not only the challenges – but also the incredible strengths and achievements – of individuals on the spectrum. My son Michael cooks, paints, swims, participates in community events – he’s even joined me at the State Capitol, proudly standing with countless other self-advocates of all abilities. Over the years, I’ve met many others like him – each with their own unique journey, and each deserving of dignity and respect.

The comments made today by Secretary Kennedy are not only deeply hurtful – they’re out of step with the experiences of millions of autistic individuals and their families. To suggest that people with autism cannot contribute to society or live meaningful lives is simply false, and it perpetuates outdated, stigmatizing views our society has worked hard to move beyond.

As Chair of the New York State Assembly’s Committee on People with Disabilities, I’ll continue to advance evidence-based policies that expand opportunity, promote inclusion, and support individuals and families – not rhetoric that spreads misinformation or marginalizes those we should be lifting up. Every person on the autism spectrum is different – with different strengths, needs, and circumstances – but all deserve to be supported and valued.”
