Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara Introduces Bipartisan Bill to Allow Hands-Free Gas Pumping in New York

Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara announced today that he has introduced legislation in the New York State Assembly that would lift the state’s outdated ban on hands-free gas pump nozzles – joining Senator Joseph Griffo, who is carrying the bill in the State Senate.

The legislation would legalize the use of nozzle clip devices that allow drivers to pump fuel without holding down the handle continuously – bringing New York in line with the rest of the country, where such devices are already permitted.

“New Yorkers deserve convenience, dignity, and safety at the pump,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. “For seniors, people with disabilities, and anyone filling up in the middle of winter, this is a small but meaningful fix to a long-outdated rule. It’s time for New York to catch up.”

New York has prohibited the use of hands-free gas pump clips since the 1980s due to safety concerns that have long been addressed by modern pump technology. Today, fuel nozzles are equipped with automatic shut-off features that prevent spills or overflows.

“As Chair of the Assembly’s Committee on People with Disabilities, I see this bill as a simple way to make life easier for those who face barriers we don’t always think about,” Assemblyman Santabarbara added. “Holding a gas pump handle for several minutes can be physically difficult – or even impossible – for individuals with disabilities or limited mobility. This bill offers more independence, reduces physical strain, and promotes equal access to something as basic as refueling a car.”

The bill has been introduced in the New York State Assembly and is expected to receive broad support from both consumer advocates and accessibility-focused organizations.
