Assemblyman Santabarbara Speaks at Community Program on Wandering Prevention and Family Safety
Joined by his son, Michael, Assemblyman Santabarbara shares both his personal experience as a father of a son with autism and his commitment to helping families prepare for emergencies
Joined by his son, Michael, who has autism, Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, Chair of the New York State Assembly Committee on People with Disabilities, spoke at a community program hosted by the Autism Society of the Greater Hudson Region and the Al-Hidaya Center’s BARAKA Program on wandering prevention, safety planning, and resources for families.
Held in response to the recent tragedy that deeply affected the Capital Region, the program focused on helping families better prepare for emergencies through wandering prevention strategies, safety planning, and information about available community resources. Organizers emphasized the importance of education, preparedness, and giving families the tools and support they need before an emergency happens.
The program brought together families, caregivers, advocates, and community members to learn practical steps that can help protect children and adults who may be at risk of wandering.
“As the father of a son with autism, I understand how important it is for families to know about the resources available before an emergency happens,” Santabarbara said. “Programs like Project Lifesaver, safety planning, and strong community partnerships can make a real difference. Every family deserves access to information and tools that help keep their loved ones safe.”
During his remarks, Santabarbara shared both his personal experiences as Michael’s father and his perspective as Chair of the Assembly Committee on People with Disabilities. He spoke about the importance of planning ahead, raising awareness, and connecting families with available resources before an emergency occurs. He also highlighted his efforts over the years to secure state funding to support Project Lifesaver in the Capital Region, helping expand access to the program for local families.
“By working together and preparing before an emergency happens, we can help protect more families and strengthen our communities,” Assemblyman Santabarbara said.
