In an effort to alleviate soaring energy prices for local small businesses, Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara (D-Rotterdam) announced that legislation he sponsored to establish a Small Business Energy Assistance and Advocacy Services Program passed the Assembly Ways and Means Committee (A.6640-B).

“For small business owners, high energy prices can hinder long-term growth and progress,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. “We must do more to help our small businesses lower their overhead costs so that they can expand and create more jobs.”

Specifically, the legislation would create a Small Business Energy Assistance and Advocacy Services Program within the NYS Department of Economic Development’s Division for Small Business. The program would provide assistance to small business owners and entrepreneurs who are looking for ways to compare and choose energy-saving alternatives. The legislation would enhance the ability of small businesses to take advantage of programs offered by the NYS Energy Research and Development Authority, public utility authorities and investor-owned utilities, as well as other energy programs designed to benefit small businesses.

Additionally, the Small Business Energy Assistance and Advocacy Services Program would represent the interests of small businesses in Public Service Commission rate cases and serve as an advocate for small businesses in proceedings related to energy prices and policies. This would help ensure that the interests of small businesses are represented in important matters affecting their ability to thrive and grow, Assemblyman Santabarbara noted.
