Assemblyman Santabarbara Statement on Executive Order Regarding Summer School for Kids with Disabilities

Although there’s still more work to do on this issue, the Executive Order issued today that will allow necessary in-person special education instruction this summer is a big win for parents and kids with disabilities in New York State. This follows my letter calling on the Governor to include options and alternatives that ensure kids with disabilities receive the services outlined in their individualized education or medical plans. Thanks to all for your support in this very important issue that is near and dear to my heart.

With plans for the beginning of the new school year in the fall still undecided, if school buildings remain closed but continue to provide instruction, I stressed to the Governor that any future plans must include options and alternatives that ensure the educational needs of this population are served. Schools must provide students with disabilities with a "free and appropriate public education”, including on-line instruction. We have an obligation to meet even under these circumstances.
