DiPietro: Protecting Our Children Is More Important Than Ever
Assemblyman David DiPietro (R,C-East Aurora) has authored Assembly Bill 6673, which prohibits certain sex offenders from residing, working or frequenting areas where children are likely to regularly congregate in Wyoming County. The bill would create “Child Safety Zones,” or areas of 1,500 feet surrounding public or private property where children are likely to gather. Registered sex offenders would be unable to live in, work in or frequent these areas.
“Children are the most vulnerable members of our society and, as an elected official it is my duty to protect them from becoming victims of violence,” DiPietro said. “Twelve other counties have similar laws and resolutions, and it’s time that Wyoming joins this list. Parents should not have to worry about the safety of their children in school zones, playgrounds, licensed daycares or swimming pools, among other locations. Parents deserve peace of mind, and I’m looking to provide a little more of that by increasing the penalties for violating our laws.”
The bill has been referred to the Assembly Correction Committee. If you are a citizen of Wyoming County and would like to voice your support for the bill, please contact DiPietro’s district office at (585) 786-0180. The assemblyman can also be reached via e-mail at dipietrod@assembly.state.ny.us.
