Assemblywoman Lupardo Joins Di Rienzo Bakery to Announce Prestigious NYS Designation

Di Rienzo placed on Historic Business Preservation Registry

Binghamton, NY – Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo joined the owners and operators of Di Rienzo Brothers Bakery to announce that the bakery-deli has been placed on the NYS Historic Business Preservation Registry (HBPR). To become a part of the Registry, businesses in operation for at least 50 years must be nominated by a state elected official. As part of the designation on the HBPR, the restaurant is featured on the program’s interactive online map and will display an official registry certificate and window decal. The Registry is administered by the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

Having first opened in 1904 by Italian immigrant Gaetano Di Rienzo, Di Rienzo Brothers Bakery has been providing fresh bread to the Henry Street neighborhood for over 120 years. In 1936, the bakery relocated up the street to its permanent home at 152 Henry Street. Under ownership of Luigi, Felice, Carmen, and Anthony Di Rienzo, the bakery added a deli in the early 1980s. While ownership has changed hands from generation to generation over the years, Gaetano’s original bread recipe lives on.

Today the bakery-deli is in its fourth generation, owned and operated by Carmen DiRienzo and his daughter, Stacey Root. The business was recently renovated with upgraded lighting, a new roof, and modern equipment to continue serving patrons for years to come. The family bakery has been known for its original bread recipe, which can be purchased in-house as well as in grocery stores across the region, with plans in place to expand its availability. Additionally, Di Rienzo Bakery has been known for its signature fried fish over the past 40 years, with today’s announcement coming just in time for Lent, in which freshly fried fish will be available every Friday until April 18th.

Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo said, “I was very happy to nominate Di Rienzo Bakery for this prestigious designation. This is a long overdue recognition for their steadfast contribution to our community’s culture and history. Being placed on the Historic Business Preservation Registry underscores how valuable the restaurant really is to our community and state.”

Carmen Di Rienzo, Co-Owner, Di Rienzo Brothers Bakery, said “We’re honored to receive this recognition from Assemblywoman Lupardo! For 120 years, Di Rienzo Bakery has been a proud part of Binghamton’s small business community, serving up tradition one loaf at a time. Here’s to the restaurants, the customers, and the love of great bread – thank you for being part of our journey!”
