Lost Money May Be Waiting For You
Comptroller’s Office to visit Binghamton and Johnson City to connect residents with unclaimed funds
Did you ever move without collecting your utility deposit, leave a job without your last pay check or forget to cash a dividend check? In cases such as these, your money was likely turned over to the Office of New York State Comptroller Alan G. Hevesi.
Representatives from the Comptroller’s Office, working with Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo (D-Endwell), will be in Binghamton and Johnson City on Thursday, April 28, 2005 to help residents determine if the state is holding any money or property for them. Lupardo will be in attendance at the Johnson City Senior Citizen’s Center from 10:30-11:30am and at Boscov’s from 2:30-3:30pm.
By law, companies that owe you money – and can’t find you – must turn the money over to the State Comptroller’s Office. Last year, the office returned about $136 million. Currently, the Comptroller’s Office is holding $7 billion in unclaimed funds. There is no fee to reclaim funds.
The Comptroller’s Office typically receives money from savings and checking accounts, certificates of deposit, uncashed checks, rental security deposits, telephone or utility deposits, wages, insurance benefits or policies, safe deposit box contents, mortgage insurance refunds, stocks and dividends, mutual funds, trust funds and estate proceeds.
To find out if New York State has any funds in your name, you can go to the Johnson City Senior Citizen’s Center from 10:00-11:30 a.m. or Boscov’s Department Store from 12:30-4:00 p.m. You can also visit the Comptroller’s Web site at www.osc.state.ny.us or call 1-800-221-9311 or 518-270-2200 (outside of New York State).
