Lupardo to Chair Subcommittee on Women Veterans in Assembly
Women veterans to be recognized in June with ceremony at Capitol
Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo (D-Endwell) announced today that she has been appointed the new Chair of the Subcommittee on Women Veterans in the Assembly. She was joined by women veterans at the Vestal American Legion Post 89 for the announcement.
“I am honored to have been chosen to serve as the new Chair of the Subcommittee on Women Veterans,” said Lupardo. “I will work to see that all our veterans, active duty military personnel and their families get the support and services that they deserve.”
In her new role, Lupardo will have the ability to hold public hearings across New York State to investigate women veterans’ issues. In addition, she has been assigned to serve as a member of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee in the Assembly.
Lupardo is also inviting women veterans to join her at a lunch and ceremony in Albany on Monday, June 11, 2007. The Assembly will be adopting resolutions for “Women Veterans’ Recognition Day” in New York State, as well as the 65th Anniversary of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps.

Women Veterans’ Recognition Day is celebrated on annually on June 12, the anniversary of President Harry S. Truman signing the Women’s Armed Services Act of 1948. The law permitted women to serve as full members of the U.S. armed forces.
In New York State, women veterans make up nearly six percent of the total state veterans population – 67,700 of the 1,171,000 New Yorkers who served in the armed forces. Two-thirds of those women served during periods of war.
