Brabenec Voices Opposition To Utility Rate Hikes

Assemblyman Karl Brabenec Calls On O&R To Forego Rate Increase

Assemblyman Karl Brabenec (R,C,I-Deerpark) today expressed disappointment and concern over Orange & Rockland Utilities’ (O&R) proposed rate hikes for 2015. O&R is proposing a six percent electric rate increase and a 19 percent natural gas rate hike, which, on average, translates to an $8 increase and $19 increase, respectively. Brabenec confirmed that he will staunchly oppose these increases, noting that these rate hikes aren’t economically feasible for families and small businesses.

“An increase in utility bills is the last thing the middle-class families of Orange and Rockland counties can afford right now,” said Brabenec. “They attempt to raise these rates under the guise that this will increase services, but I’m not sure any rate hike such as this has ever been accompanied by a windfall of new or superior services. As Deerpark Supervisor, I fought O&R’s last rate hike tooth and nail, and I promise to fight this one with the same intensity.”

Brabenec has received numerous resolutions from towns across the district joining the opposition to these rate increases. He noted that he will be sending letters to O&R as well as the New York Public Service Commission.
