Brabenec Issues Statement Following Statewide Press Conferences to Stop Bail Reform

Assemblyman Karl Brabenec (R,C,I-Deerpark) joined law enforcement, elected officials, and members of local district attorney’s offices for a series of press conferences today organized by the New York State Sheriff’s Association in calling for a one-year moratorium on “bail reform,” set to take effect January 1.

Attendees are calling for the Legislature to reconvene before January for a special session in order to place a one-year moratorium on criminal justice reforms that could result in many defendants, including drug dealers and pedophiles, to be released from jail immediately following arraignment.

“I applaud the law enforcement community of Orange and Rockland counties for bringing the perils of the recently-passed bail reform package to the public eye,” said Brabenec. “I have always been 100 percent supportive of their efforts to keep our residents safe from harm's way. That is why I have introduced legislation in the Assembly to repeal these ridiculous reforms and why I have started an online petition urging the governor and legislative leaders to call a special session before January 1, so we can fight to make public safety a top priority again. I urge everyone to contact their state legislators to lobby for passage of the repeal.”
