Queens, NY Assemblywoman Nily Rozic (D, WF-Fresh Meadows) attended the SelfHelp Community Services Fresh Meadows NORC to celebrate their annual barbecue and announce state funding for wellness and medical support programs for seniors. Through her office, Rozic allocated $50,000 in a state grant for the NORC this year. As a result of this funding, seniors have been enjoying “Wellness Wednesdays,” where a nutritionist is available once a week to answer questions and share valuable insight in both a class and 1:1 setting to aid participants in understanding how food can help with chronic conditions as well as learning new recipes for

healthier eating. The program also funds an exercise instructor to keep seniors moving and active.

“Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is imperative for our older adults,” said Assemblywoman Nily Rozic. “This grant provides social, nutritional, and physical activities for the residents of Fresh Meadows and allows them to continue aging healthily in their homes. I am proud to continue to fund critical programs such as “Wellness Wednesdays” and work in partnership with SelfHelp in providing resources and space for our seniors.”

"We extend our gratitude to Assemblywoman Rozic for her ongoing support of the Fresh Meadows NORC. Her significant funding ensured that NORC members had access to consistent health and wellness resources including the popular “Wellness Wednesday” program that included the nutritionist, exercise classes, and wellness programs. “Wellness Wednesdays” have brought older residents together to foster a healthier and more vibrant Fresh Meadows community. Assemblywoman Rozic's commitment to enhancing the well-being of NORC members is deeply appreciated," said Katie Foley, Managing Director, External Affairs, Selfhelp Community Services.

“The Nutrition Class with Anna has provided valuable information with demonstrations of

easy-to-implement changes that enhance your overall well-being,” said M.R, a Member of the NORC. “I met with Anna one-on-one for guidance controlling my insulin resistance and hormonal imbalance. Her advice and guidance, with the small nutritional changes, have been instrumental in lowering my A1C number, leveling my blood glucose and losing nine pounds (9 lbs.). I look forward to this class every week because I learn something new each time and have been exposed to different types of healthy food choices and snacks that I would have never tried or thought of on my own. I am very happy with this program and would like it to continue here in Fresh Meadows.”

The Selfhelp Community Services Fresh Meadows NORC supports older adults–including Holocaust survivors–age at home and is a growing community with over 330 members. NORCs are housing complexes where the majority of residents are over 60 years old and programs such as Selfhelp’s, provide senior residents with supportive services that allow them to continue living comfortably at home. Services include case management, supportive counseling, health screenings, and social, recreational, and educational programs. Selfhelp Community Services Fresh Meadows NORC is located on 192nd Street and 67th Avenue in Fresh Meadows.

Additional community investments recently announced by Rozic include $125,000 to the Chinese-American Planning Council Queens Community Center and $250,000 to P.S. 162 The John Golden School for a renovated auditorium.
