Assemblywoman Nily Rozic Allocates Funding for New Science Lab at P.S.173
On International Day of Girls in STEM, Rozic announces $480,000 in state funding for STEM & hydroponics lab for Fresh Meadows School
Queens, NY – Assemblywoman Nily Rozic (D, WF-Fresh Meadows) visited P.S.173 to announce a $480,000 state grant she allocated to the school to fund a new science lab. The funding will provide major upgrades to the existing science classroom, transforming the space into a dynamic STEM and hydroponics lab where students will use new state-of-the art technology to learn about plant science and sustainable agriculture. Interactive whiteboards, microscopes connected to projected displays, access to research databases, optimal experiment lighting, and ample lab storage for safety and organization will all be included in the renovated space. Rozic makes this announcement in celebration of International Day of Girls in STEM.
“I’m so excited to allocate state funding to this project and I can’t wait to see the students of P.S.173 using STEM concepts to cultivate their own plants and learn about the interconnectedness of ecosystems in their new science lab,” said Assemblywoman Rozic. “As with all investments into our public schools, upgrades like these motivate students to be excited about learning and in turn, shape the scientists and engineers of tomorrow.”
“We couldn't be more thrilled and thankful to have been awarded this grant through Assemblywoman Rozic. This funding will transform our elementary school science room into a vibrant STEM learning hub. Our students will thrive in this innovative space, exploring plant science in a hydroponics garden, engaging in hands-on experiments, and utilizing cutting-edge technology. This project is a heartfelt investment in our children's future, inspiring them to become the next generation of scientists and lifelong learners,” said Principal Danielle Tweedy.
P.S.173 is located on 67th Avenue and 173rd Street in Fresh Meadows and offers classes from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 5. Additional community investments recently announced by Rozic include $50,000 for Charles B. Wang Community Health Center in Flushing to pilot a parent support group / breastfeeding education program.
