New York, NY – Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal (D/WF-Manhattan) announced today that her bill to provide retirement credits to those who served in active military duty on or after September 11, 2001 and prior to January 1, 2006 will go into effect immediately after being signed by the Governor last Friday.

“I am so pleased to be able to share this wonderful news with our brave service members here in New York on the eve of Veteran’s Day,” said Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal. “In the aftermath of 9/11, thousands of this country’s service women and men were called into active military duty, and this law will ensure that New York City employees who answered that call of duty are credited for their time served.”

In 2005, the State Legislature passed a law to ensure that time served in active military duty by New York State employees counted toward their retirement plans. The law inadvertently omitted New York City employees from coverage of this critically important law, meaning that any time served in active military duty did not count toward the employee’s pension.

The new law, Chapter 427 of the Laws of 2014, which was sponsored by Andrew J. Lanza in the New York State Senate, will ensure that the brave women and men employed by New York City are credited for their time served, just like their State-employed counterparts.
