Assemblymember Phil Steck Welcomes Capital District Regional Market to New York State Historic Business Preservation Registry

Menands, NY – Assemblymember Phil Steck is proud to announce that the Capital District Regional Market has been officially added to the New York State Historic Business Preservation Registry. This recognition honors businesses and organizations that have made significant contributions to New York State's economic and cultural heritage for nearly a century.

Since 1933, the Capital District Cooperative, Inc., now widely known as the Capital District Regional Market, has served the region as a market owned and operated by the farmer, for the farmer. More than 90 years later, the market continues to thrive with the support of more than 100 cooperative members dedicated to strengthening local agriculture and expanding access to fresh, locally grown food. In 2010, the United States Department of Agriculture officially recognized the Capital Region as a Regional Food Hub, further highlighting the market's importance to New York's agricultural economy.

Assemblymember Steck presented the official Historic Business Preservation Registry certificate to Capital District Regional Market’s Board President Timothy Stanton, Board Member Matt Brizzell, and Administrator Nicole Burke during a ceremony held at the market on June 17.

"The Capital District Regional Market is one of the true gems of our region," said Assemblymember Steck. "For more than 90 years, it has connected local farmers, creators, and small business owners with the community while strengthening our agricultural economy. As someone who represents this area and has the market right in my backyard, I know firsthand how important it is to the Capital Region. I am proud to have nominated the Capital District Regional Market for inclusion on the New York State Historic Business Preservation Registry and pleased to see it receive this well-deserved recognition."

"We thank Assemblymember Steck and his office for this historic recognition,” said Board President Timothy Stanton. “As a market owned and operated by farmers, for farmers, we are proud that the contributions of our cooperative members are being recognized through this historic designation."

Menands Mayor Brian A. Marsh said, “The Village of Menands is proud to congratulate the Capital District Regional Market on its inclusion in the New York State Historic Business Preservation Registry. This recognition is a fitting tribute to an institution that has played a vital role in the economic and cultural life of the Capital Region for decades. The Market has long served as a hub for local farmers, businesses, and consumers, strengthening our regional economy while preserving the rich agricultural heritage of New York State. Its enduring presence has made it not only a center of commerce but also a valued community asset that generations of residents know and appreciate. We commend everyone who has contributed to the Market's success over the years and celebrate this well-deserved honor. The Village looks forward to the Capital District Regional Market continuing its legacy of service, growth, and community impact for many years to come. We are so proud to have you here in Menands.”

Today, the Capital District Regional Market serves as a vital hub for agriculture and commerce in the Capital Region. Through its wholesale market, Saturday farmers market, and special events, it connects local farmers, food producers, artisans, and entrepreneurs with consumers while preserving New York's agricultural traditions.

The New York State Historic Business Preservation Registry celebrates businesses and organizations that have made enduring contributions to the state's history, culture, and economy. The Capital District Regional Market's inclusion on the Registry recognizes its longstanding commitment to supporting local agriculture and serving as a gathering place for the Capital Region community for more than nine decades.
