Assemblymember Steck: Assembly Passes Reforms to Limit Outside Income of Legislators
“In recent years, there have been several instances of state legislators leveraging their elected office to obtain no-show jobs and kickbacks when no actual work is performed. The legislation we passed today addresses this problem by prohibiting legislators from receiving outside income unless it is directly related to work they actually performed. No more will legislators be able, for example, to gain money simply by lending their name to a law firm. By not banning outside income entirely, but regulating it, we ensure that legislators can continue to work in their trades and have the same experiences in the working world as their constituents. That is very valuable in understanding what the people we serve go through in their everyday lives.”
